For some reason, I disliked each successive book more, so that when I reread The Golden Compass, I didn't continue with the series. I should try them again; it's been at least ten years since I read the whole series.Erinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11429588794754369453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8282761092944595871.post-46703671034232378392011-03-27T17:10:58.302-05:002011-03-27T17:10:58.302-05:00I was just in a used bookstore with my daughter ea...I was just in a used bookstore with my daughter earlier today, and since she's going off to college next fall, she was asking me to buy her copies of books she has to have with her--this was one of them. I think th ebooks are supposed to take a somewhat allegorical route as they progress (it's hard to tread the waters he treads without being a BIT allegorical, after all), and I really enjoyed them from that aspect.Keshalyihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00900218197083383905noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8282761092944595871.post-43778034674651119362011-03-27T12:04:25.028-05:002011-03-27T12:04:25.028-05:00I love this book! When I read it in middle school, I didn't pick up on a lot of the critical religious themes, but in looking back I think I agree with you -- it's more about knowledge than it is about any religion specifically.Kim (Sophisticated Dorkiness)https://www.blogger.com/profile/09240085627916462704noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8282761092944595871.post-28163634506736407772011-03-27T11:31:24.758-05:002011-03-27T11:31:24.758-05:00OK, now : the movie was a HUGE disappointment.

This read is one that they looked forward to every night.

Totally drawn in audience. And a child as a hero? What kid doesn't love that?Alexandrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00609629888008025050noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8282761092944595871.post-29981170736214268862011-03-27T09:20:21.997-05:002011-03-27T09:20:21.997-05:00I would argue the exact same. I listened to a full cast, unabridged, BBC Radio adaptation that I thought was terrific. Until the movie came out, I had a good number of students read the entire series each year for classroom book clubs. They never picked up on the anti-church stuff as far as I could tell. After the movie, interest in the books died off. This year, they've had no takers.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06906212382849291562noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8282761092944595871.post-56639176889738908402011-03-26T22:33:34.479-05:002011-03-26T22:33:34.479-05:00Watch this as soon as you've rewatched the fil...Watch this as soon as you've rewatched the film. It's the original ending (as pieced together by a fan) the film was going to have well into post-production, before New Line panicked. I'm going to revisit this series soon, and I'm glad to see yours is starting off on the right food.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8282761092944595871.post-36748517219505804092011-03-26T22:09:05.739-05:002011-03-26T22:09:05.739-05:00I never knew what this was about but actually it s...I never knew what this was about but actually it sounds great! The books are good, but as the series progresses it seems more and more like Pullman is pushing an anti-church agenda, and that really ended up putting me off this series a bit in the end.Meganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07751131767729086158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8282761092944595871.post-72068510208438630852011-03-26T20:39:07.935-05:002011-03-26T20:39:07.935-05:00I wish I hadn't listened to this one because t...I wish I hadn't listened to this one because the girl who played Lyra did a craptastic job and made me really dislike the book.
