Guest Post: Alexandra Returns to Reading

I am currently buried under family members, food, festival, and fun, so some kind bloggers have graciously agreed to guest post here on eclectic / eccentric.

Today, Alexandra from Good Day, Regular People shares with you her thoughts on the effect blogging has on reading time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Has Blogging Affected Your Reading Life?
A few weeks ago, Trisha posted on her ever growing TBR list and the accompanying anxiety that grows along with it. Her post smacked of what has happened to my reading life, since I began blogging. And I don't like it.
I've always been hungry for books. I would go through them like popcorn ever since I taught myself to read at age 4, when my grandmother became too busy to read to me as more brothers and sisters came along. In my childhood room, there would be a minimum of 3 books bookmarked, that I'd be reading simultaneously.
I was the bookworm kid who'd get caught with the flashlight on under the covers, after lights out, just reading "one more chapter." Sleep deprived was how I made my way through grade school and high school. All due to the written word. I couldn't get enough of it. I was always on the look out for what to read next.  I would look over people's shoulders on the bus, or in the library, to see what they were reading.
This has been my reading life for the past too many years to count or to say how long it's been. That all changed when I began blogging this past winter. I did not know, nor could've predicted, that no longer reading would be a fallout from my blogging. Aside from blogging being a mass consumer of time, it has also eaten up my before bedtime nightly ritual of curling up with a good book. The thing is, I love blogging. I love meeting people who come to my blog. I love visiting other blogs.
I would enter my room, and see the pile of TBR books, one stacked on top of the other, right next to my bed. Before I began blogging, I'd reach for the book on top, every night, without change, and read. Now, I see this pile of books, and they remind me how I just don't read anymore. I had to move the stack, so I wouldn't have to visually pass it before getting into bed. The sleep of the guilty is not a refreshing one. I kept promising myself that "after this week," I'd get back to it. I'd promise that "after I get back to my commenters," I'd pick up a book.  But the time never came. As my pile grew, my displeasure at not cracking a book open in months, also grew.
I was not happy. I did not want to stop blogging, I did not want to stop reading blogs, I did not want to stop interacting with the commenters visiting my site.  Clearly, we had the ying to the yang of blogging. I wanted both, but there we had it, the dark and the light. I knew that the only way to have something happen, was to plan for it. Just as your bathrooms won't get cleaned unless you plan to put aside Sunday night to do them, the time had to be made for my books.
I am a happier person when I read. I am a better writer when I read. I am a more interesting person when I read. Reading a book satisfies me in a way that reading blogs can't. I am able to enter a book, and live life there, and return to this new place, every time I open its pages. Reading books is something I do not want to give up.
I now blog only three times a week. That is what works for me, and what I had to do. I look forward to Tuesday, Thursday, and a weekend night as my reading nights. I had to impose these blogging restrictions on myself. It's funny that I had to do this, but there was no other way. I knew that if I kept on "hoping" for a change, that nothing would come. I'm back to reading, I'm happier, my pile of books no longer a reminder of all the reading not getting done. The pile next to my bed now patiently sits and waits for me, knowing that I have made time for my books to be read, three times a week.
Has blogging affected your reading time? What have you done to get your reading life back?
  2. Great idea to blog only three times a week!
    I, too, am a voracious reader and tend towards either classics (generally english or russian) or contemporary thrillers.
  3. By the time you have done the blog rounds and read the posts (that you just must read) two hours have passed!
  4. My summer blogging has not messed with my reading, but once my new quarter of teaching starts back up (college English) it will be a battle between prepping, grading, and blogging. The leisure reading will fall by the wayside, I'm sure. One has to ask: What books are in your current TBR pile!
  5. I have pretty much stopped reading and I'm not happy about it either. I think soon, I'll be able to get a better balance.
  6. If I'm writing a lot, then I don't read as much. Blogging is writing, isn't it?
  7. Oddly, blogging has increased my reading. I used to read 50 books or so a year, now I'm hitting nearly 200 each year. It's crazy. And I'm writing more than ever too, which is wonderful.
  8. Good morning, everyone. It is a genuine pleasure to be here at Eclectic's place. I look forward to the new fellow book lovers and sites I'll find.
    Thank you, Trisha, for this most awesome blogging opportunity. Enjoy your family time!
  9. I am mixed, like Amanda, I read more books now - but I have to manage my time better. I usually do blog posts early in the morning, and my reading in the evenings.
    I like to read blogs and of course reading blogs leads to more books I want to read. :D
  10. Interesting! Blogging has definitely affected my reading time, but I still read as much or more and just take time away from other things like real life friends (hey, we can't all be perfect right? heh). I also read while eating and cooking and on lunch break and other times that I didn't use to read as much. (Oh, and being single now certainly gives me more reading time too!) I'm happy that at the moment I can (mostly) juggle reading and blogging, but it does get stressful and sometimes I get frustrated not to be reading enough. Your system seems to work well, so congratulations on making it work for you!
  11. I am so glad you posted this! I started blogging in February, and before that really didn't even know there was a whole WORLD of blogs out there. Now, I love reading other blogs, catching up on old posts they wrote before I followed, and commenting to commenters....yeah, not reading many books anymore. I can't tell you how many in my pile have been returned to the library after the 3-week checkout has passed and I haven't cracked them.
    I like your idea, and I think I need to do something similar. Great post, Empress!
  12. I was just thinking about this the other night. By the time, I get ready to curl up on the couch to read, I'm wiped out from the day.
    My reading time has been taken over by blogging and catching up on my blog friends. It's hard to manage but I'm thinking of adopting your policy of having reading nights and blogging nights. My biggest concern is that my new-found blog friends will think I'm neglecting them if I don't visit often.....sigh.
  13. Whoa! This has been bugging me for months now. I have almost completely stopped reading books since about February. I have books glaring at me right now. I'm 3/4 of the way through the latest book by my favorite author and I just can't find the time to read. One of my biggest time sucks is editing my photography.
    I've read books every day since I was a kid. Now nothing. Balance is everything and I'm waaaaaaaaay out of that. I've made a ton of changes to my blogging routine to free up time. The time has gone to other important things instead of reading. Time to get back on track.
  14. I find that blogging has eaten up my reading time as well. I've tried to spread out my pile of TBR books throughout the house. That way, there's not one massive pile to make me feel guilty. I don't think it's working. One thing I've noticed recently when at the book store is that nothing appeals to me. That's really odd. Just seems like there are a lot of books out there without much substance that are pretty much carbon copies of each other. Right now I'm reading a lot of non-fiction, but I'm hoping to spot that fiction book that will respark my interest in reading.
  15. It is proving to be so hard to balance blogging and reading. I've continued to read, but now it takes a couple of weeks to finish a book instead of just a few days.
    Your solution to blog on certain days of the week sounds perfect! I keep trying to set up a schedule for myself, but it simply hasn't worked.
  16. I too had that realization one day - I think it was right about when the 101st person asked me whether or not I had read "The Help."
    And like you, I have now implemented an "editorial calendar." The fact that I have an incredible blogging community around me helps as well. We all seem to understand that if an e-mail doesn't get returned or a post not commented upon, it's not something I did or they did. It's because we're all busy, and that a return visit will happen again, maybe far in the future, but keeping score has no place at my place.
    There are nights when I crawl into bed and my husband looks at me funny because I grab a book and not my computer. That's a sure sign I need to start cracking the spines a little more. Or paying more attention to him.
    It's all good.
  17. Pffft! Girl, you are singing my song! I feel like I need to comment on every blog I follow, I have to write reviews, and keep up with e-mails. Then there are those pesky kids who insist on being fed! Somewhere in there I read, but I constantly ask myself how I can keep this up. I like your advice. Before I do something like that, I will have to let go of the commenting thing...
  18. Blogging has definitely put a dent in my reading. But so has having kids. At night, if I'm not blogging, I just want to collapse in bed and watch mindless TV. I'm in the midst of reading Lit by Mary Karr on my Kindle. Haven't touched it since I got off the plane last week!
  19. I LOVE reading, but if it's not blogging it would be tv taking up my time so I think it is great that you have scheduled reading time. I like that idea! Thanks.
  20. See now this makes me feel guilty. I shall return to books when kindergarten starts. I must.
  21. I am fortunate to no longer work. I have so much time to read and cook and blog and have time with my hubby. I read at least five books a week. The library is my next best friend. I could never afford or have room for the amount of books that I read.
  22. I was the kid reading under the covers too! I was you! Or you were me. Or something. Anyway, your childhood sounds very, very familiar. As does the lack of reading now that I blog. Such a bummer. I'm getting ready to join a new book club, that I hope will motivate me. And I love hearing your blogging / reading schedule. I'm fascinated my people's blogging schedules and how they do it. Especially you! With so many admirers! But that's a great idea to set aside a few reading nights. Gonna institute that ASAP.
  23. Such a great post! I'm trying to figure this out right now. I love blogging, but it's becoming a huge time suck. And I miss my books. I have a pile next to my bed and on my desk that are just begging to be read.
  24. Ahh, so true. My blogging life is young - I only started in May, but I share your longing to continue both reading and writing.
    For me, my TBR list sits on the coffee table where I have my morning coffee,so I sneak a little reading time then. Although that time is short, it is better than nothing and wets my appetite for the next snatch of time that comes my way.
    I have also fallen in love with blogging and although I started out writing about weight loss (the subject of my ebook)I now find I have the desire to just write, often and about anything! Mostly though I continue to write about weight loss and self improvement and for me reading is self improvement, so I try to keep it up.
    Thanks so much for an interesting post and it is nice to meet some fellow bloggers.
  25. Clearly I have a lot to learn about leaving comments. I forgot to add my link. It is www.monsbiz.wordpress.com
    Thanks guys!
  26. Your childhood sounds a lot like mine!
    And yes, blogging has taken a big bite into my book reading. I find I go in spurts now. And I always read less in the summer. Maybe when cooler weather gets here...
  27. You mean reading blogs and comments doesn't equal reading a book? OK, I knew that, but I didn't really want to. I prefer living in denial.
  28. It can all seem overwhelming sometimes - since blogging I find so many books that I want/need to read but my reading time is reduced by blogging! Trying to find that balance is tough - I like your idea of a schedule - I may have to try that!
    ReplyDelete
  29. Great topic, Alexandra! I'm so glad that you made a plan and it looks like it will give you balance. I got back into reading late last year, at around the same time I started blogging. What I've found is that I would go through cycles - periods of time when I am really into blogging (both writing and reading), and then other times when I feel a bit less motivated to blog but more interested in reading. I have been going with my mood but I don't like this, as it means I nomentarily disappear from one thing or another. I really like your idea of a schedule, and I think I will need to do that, especially as I have now started to work and will be really busy until mid-winter. I love books too. Next time let's share good titles and recommendations!!
  30. I know...I know...I really should cut down on the number of days I'm posting so I can actually enjoy life! I miss reading books more than anything. I am really considering only blogging 3 or 4 times a week. We'll see...
    ReplyDelete
  31. When I first started blogging, it did kind of take over everything ... even reading. (Perhaps that is why I didn't make the 100 book challenge for the past two years). But as time goes on, you realize you have to find a balance or you will burn out fast. I think I'm finally there, and I'm glad you found that balance too. To think of giving up either one is unthinkable!
