Ready to Read?

Just one short week from today, I will be participating in Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon for the first time. *I'm so excited, duh-duh-duh, and I just can't hide it, duh-duh-duh...* Pardon the spontaneous silliness. As you can see, I'm looking forward to it. For the past month, I've been thinking about what to read, buying new books, flipping through my TBR pile, analyzing my challenges, and in general geeking out over creating a to read pile for the readathon. Eventually I narrowed down to 20 books. *insert hysterical giggling here*

Clearly, I'm never going to get through 20 books in 24 hours unless the good lord grants me two mini-mes to help out. But it is a nice pile to draw from with an odd mix of short/long, easy/difficult, YAL/SciFi/Lit. Here's the list bottom to top: bold=freebie from one of you, italics=recommended by one of you,

Flashforward by Robert Sawyer
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Don't Panic by Neil Gaiman
Big Fish by Daniel Wallace
Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith
the chosen one by Carol Lynch Williams
20 Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler
hush, hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
Jacob's Room by Virginia Woolf
Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
Dreaming Anastasia by Joy Preble
Affinity by Sarah Waters
The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry
A Living Nightmare, The Vampire's Assistant, and Tunnels of Blood by Darren Shan
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
Dream Country by Neil Gaiman
Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman
Everyone She Loved by Sheila Curran

My big question: which book should I start with and why?

  1. Excellent books! I have 15 in my list and there's no way I'll get through them all, but at least I have options!

  2. Great list! I don't know how you'll ever get through all of them! I would start with the short ones, to give you a boost of confidence!

  4. Great list! I don't know enough of them to tell you which to start with, but I've started Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (and it's going on my read-a-thon list too) and it makes me laugh out loud... so it might be good for a later book :)

    Good luck!

  5. I have 30 in my list, and while I have no hope of actually getting them all read, I'd like to get at least 5 off of my pile. (And Les Miz is certainly not one of them.) It seems like a lot of people are including graphic novels in their list, and I don't know any titles I should check out. I haven't really read them much before, aside from one volume of The Sandman. Any recs you throw my way are much appreciated.

Good luck, and I'll see you around next weekend!

  6. Amanda - That's how I feel. I have a nice mix to choose from. Options are good.

Rhapsody and Serena - Oh, there's no way I'll get through them. I read fast, but not that fast.

Tara SG - I think that's going to be one of my early reads. It seems like it will be an easy-ish one.

Laura - I would recommend Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, Alan Moore's Watchmen, and Neil Gaiman's Sandman series (which it seems you've started). I've heard good things about Understanding Comics and britten and brulightly. and

  9. What a great list of books, you sure look like you're going to have a fun readathon!

I'd start with The Knife of Never Letting Go, but then I'm biased, because it's one of my favourite books I've read this year!

  11. Lola - I just can't wait!

Carrie K. - We should have a mass readathon readalong of the book.

Bart - I think I'm going to take your advice.

Katrina - That song was stuck in my head for quite some time too. Better than the Barney song...crap now that's stuck in my head.

  12. My stack is smaller than usual with 11 books, but I hope to get to 4 of them for sure. I have Knife of Never in my stack but I fear it's too long?

And yay for hysterical giggling. I'm SO excited!!! Eeeeeee! :)

  13. Trish - I think I stole your "readathon readathon readathon" chant on a vlog I did, but haven't put up yet. And from what I hear, KoNLG is long but quick, so I'm thinking I might start with it.

  14. I haven't read it, but a lot of people say The Knife of Never Letting Go is very compelling, so that might make for a good start.

Trish - The vlog is for my mini-challenge. Eh to me on screen, but hey why not right?

  17. I need to get my read-a-thon post up. Maybe Cat's Cradle, cause it's short? I have that one on my shelves, but haven't added it to me pile yet. Maybe I should!

  18. Looks like a nice pile. I've got Fragile Things on mine, too! =)

  19. Stacy - Cat's Cradle is definitely up there on my to read list. I think it works for three separate challenges which is just awesome!

Megan - I have been meaning to read Fragile Things for soo long. I plan on interspersing short stories between book and as breaks.

  21. You've got quite the stack! I'm planning on starting with a short book (likely A House on Mango Street) since it gives quick results.

  22. I'd love a mini-me to help get through my TBR tower!

Have fun! My daughter, a friend, and I are participating. Last year, I read 1 book, but we did more talking and going online than reading. I'll be posting my book list later today, hopefully.

  23. Dana - I'm so excited I can barely wait.

Ronnica - I started with that in mind as well. Now I can't decide between fast read and highly recommended read.

Anna - Wouldn't a mini-me be useful in so many situations?
