I have now read up to page 249 in A Game of Thrones, and I am still loving it. As I said in my first post on the book, the book is too complex for me to write my typical review, so I'm having fun and playing around with the way I respond to this amazing story.
The I Was Wrong Admission
The first 118 pages made me really, really dislike Tyrion, but the next 131 showed me I was wrong. Tyrion consistently proved himself clever and caring. My Least Favorite Character has now switched to Robert, the giant pansy-assed king who is only concerned with his own comfort and pleasure. The truly evil characters don't bother me quite as much as the apathetic ones apparently.
A Beautiful Moment
Robb, a 14 year old boy left in charge of a kingdom, and his 7 year old brother Bran share a very touching moment. Robb's been trying to be brave and strong and everything a Lord should be, but he lets his guard down a bit with his younger brother. Martin managed to manipulate Robb's words so that what he was saying came out exactly like a boy trying to be outwardly brave but terrified inside.
A Picture Which Reminds Me of the Book
The setting is a cold, harsh place, and yet the beauty of the setting, both physical and cultural is easily seen, so this picture seems fitting. I found it here if you are interested.
Final Thoughts
I am just as much in love with the story as I was in the beginning. Despite the large cast of characters and the numerous distinct plot lines, I am not finding it too difficult to keep up. Martin is clearly a skilled writer with a wonderful imagination. Now on to the next 150 pages or so....
I love that picture: STOP TRYING TO TEMPT ME INTO READING THIS SERIES! Argh, it's getting harder and harder to hold out!
ReplyDeleteYOU WILL BE WRONG SO MANY TIMES! Suddenly and unexpectedly loving on characters I previously HATED has been one of the joys of this series. Also, all the unexpected deaths.
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you are still liking this one! I also feel like it's hard to hold out what with the whole book community reading and loving these books! It's getting harder and harder to resist and let my husband read them first!
ReplyDeleteI was waiting to hear your updated thoughts on Tyrion :) I started off HATING him but grew to appreciate him a bit more as I read. And you are right, the apathetic are the worst aren't they!
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about Tyrion -- started out thinking he was a little jerk, but he really grew on me. I'll be curious what you think about his choices near the end of the book, since they frustrated me a bit.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a series I gotta read!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the non-typical review -- it totally gives me a real feel for what you're thinking/experiencing. Love it! I might ahve to try this, someday, someday...
ReplyDeleteI like this style of reviewing. It's nice to get snippets of a review as you're in the process of reading through the book. It's more organic and less stilted than a formal review (not that your reviews are stilted, but there is a different feel to these.
ReplyDeleteYay!! I'm so glad that you like Tyrion now - I didn't want to give anything away with my comment on your first post, so I'm so thrilled right now! This story is absolutely incredible and book 2 is no different!
ReplyDeleteI tried to read the first of this series about a year ago or so, but couldn't get into it. Now that it's famous and everyone is loving it -- I of course want to try again. Was it hard to get into for you?
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm glad you like Tyrion! Though I bet you'll vacillate on him as the series goes forth. Just wait till you get in the head of his brother!
ReplyDeleteI loved the first three books in this series, but the fourth and fifth have pretty much left me cold. I don't know if it's because there was so much time for me between books or something else- but I feel like that spark (and the plot) just isn't there for me any more.
