Game of Thrones

I just read 118 pages of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones (or is it A Game of Thrones?) and I am loving it. The first book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, (A) Game of Thrones introduces readers to the Stark family and the people around them. So many characters are introduced and so many strange connections exist between them that I actually started drawing up family trees for this extensive cast of of characters. My husband thinks I'm nuts. I think I'm hooked.

After a mere 118 pages in a series with more than 4000 total pages, my horribly simplistic summation is this: the throne - the Iron Throne - is at risk with the Lannister family fighting to take over and the Starks fighting to save the kingdom. The exiled children of the ruler overrun by Stark and company prior to the start of the book are also a player in the game (the Targaryen family). And then there are the dozens (probably to reach 100s) of other characters who are rotating around these central forces. That's my guess as to the main plotline of the series.

But then we have to throw in The Others, who are, as far as I can tell, a contemporary bogeyman type who are based in solid fact. Outside of some basic "aren't they scary" stuff, I don't know much about them quite yet.

So much is happening, so much depth and intrigue is right there on the page, that I know I will never be able to properly review these books. Instead of trying and failing, I figure I will do something a bit different, keep it a bit more simple. So I am going to talk about the books here on the blog whenever the mood strikes me, and I'm going to do so in whatever way I feel like. Without further ado, my reaction to the first 118 pages:

My Favorite Character: Arya
The youngest daughter and fourth child of Lord Eddard (Ned) Stark, Arya is one awesome 9 year old. She's the girl rebel of the story so far. She sucks at sewing, wants a sword, is loyal to a fault, a mischief maker, and stuck with a perfectly feminine and perfectly perfect older sister Sansa. When the boys in the family brought back some very unexpected direwolf pups, Sansa names hers Lady; Arya, on the other hand, names hers Nymeria after an ancient witch mentioned in songs. That's my girl.

My Least Favorite Character: Tyrion
Tyrion is the brother of Cersei Lannister, the woman who became queen upon marrying Robert Baratheon. I do not think he is the most evil in the story. Right now, his sister and her twin Jaime are in the running for that title. Their actions are horrid, their plans devious. Viserys, a Targaryen, may actually be even worse than Cersei and Jaime; he's an abusive, narcissistic, violent, arrogant asshat. Tyrion, on the other hand, has done nothing wrong and doesn't seem to be planning anything. But. He is the type to walk the sidelines, manipulate the players, and watch the chaos. He knows the evil lurking in others' hearts and does nothing to stop it; he plays on the emotions of others to encourage evil. Bad Tyrion.

My Holy Shit Moment: Bran
Oh my beejeesus Bran. I will not say anymore for those who haven't read the story.

My Favorite Moment: Dany and Drogo (minor plot spoiler)
Dany, short for Daenerys, is the daughter of the assassinated King Targaryen. In exile with her only surviving relative, her brother Viserys, Dany's only ambition is to lead a normal life. She doesn't care about winning back the throne. Viserys is determined, however, and his path to the throne requires Dany. He forces her to marry Khal Drogo, a man who appears vicious. When he's not, I got happy.

What I Want to Happen by the End: A Victorious Jon
Jon is the bastard son of Lord Stark, accepted by his father and brother, but totally rejected by Catelyn, Stark's wife (for obvious reasons). Despite his relative acceptance, Jon is always relegated to a lower role, especially in light of Catelyn's rejection. At page 118, Jon is off with his uncle Benjen, who seems to be a very cool man, to join the Night Watch. A group of unmarried, dedicated warriors who keep the uncivilized, criminal, and possibly otherworldly outsides at bay. I really hope he comes into his own by the end; although part of me worries he may go dark side.

Final Thoughts: Immersion
This is the type of series I can really get involved in. (Sorry about ending in a preposition). I'm already feeling like the characters are real people, that the story is a historical account of a real time. And then there's the clincher: I'm dreaming about the story. I always know I am in love with a story when the characters and setting start permeating my dream worlds. Love it!

And on a side note: No, I have  never seen the HBO series. I'm too poor to afford HBO. :) And yes I will probably ask for the first season on DVD for Christmas, but I won't start watching until I've read the entire book series.

For Those Who Have Read It: Is it as awesome as I think it is going to be?

  1. I'm like 76 pages in, so I love this little update! I love Arya so far too, she's my favorite by far. I'm worried something terrible is going to happen to her. And yes, OMG Bran. That was the moment I realized that, for real, no one is safe here.

I'd love to see your family tree -- I"m trying to figure out how to keep the characters all straight myself.

  2. I have read about 48 pages and I love those pages truly, madly, deeply. The show made me love Ty though!

  3. Kim and Pam - That is so awesome we are all reading it at the same time!!! And loving it.

Kim - I feel the same way about Arya. Since I love her, something horrid is going to happen. Maybe Viserys....

Pam - I wonder if Tyrion will grow on me - or maybe I just haven't seen enough of him to understand his personality yet....

  4. I loved the first book, enjoyed the second and third, but found the fourth to be an absolute snore-fest. It only deals with half the key characters (none of my favourites) and doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

I'm seriously considering giving up on it, finding a detailed summary somewhere, and the launching into the Dance With Dragons. If that one doesn't win me back, though, I'm likely done with the series. The gap between books is just too long, and my anticipation factor (at the moment, at least) is just too low to survive the wait.

  5. I did watch the series and it was FRICKIN' AMAZING! I wasn't planning to read the series because it isn't finished yet (I'm still waiting for the last Wheel of Time book!) but after seeing the show and finding out that it closely follows the book I can't wait to pick it up. My plan is to watch season 1 (done!) then read book 1. Then I'll watch season 2 and read book 2. At least, that's the plan ...

  6. YOu guys are all making me crazy. Taking on a series with 4,000 pages makes me feel ill. But I also know that usually with that much heft, you usually get something back for your investment. OK, if I break my leg and am in bed for a few months, I will read them.

  7. I can't wait to hear how your answers change as you keep reading!!! I had some similar thoughts to you at the beginning but in one key point I've definitely changed my mind. I can't wait until you get to the end of book 2, then I want to discuss with you :D :D So read fast. LOL

  8. I have been seeing this everywhere lately, read by people who typically read the type of books I read, lol. My husband has read the whole series (up until the one that just came out) multiple times and loves them. I would NEVER have imagined myself getting into it but now I'm super curious, LOL. There is one series I really love that is completely out of my typical genres so that makes me hopeful about this. So who knows, maybe you'll see something from me about this too. =) And yes, from what I hear, it is that awesome.

  9. I tried to read the first in this series a long time ago, and had a hard time with it. I think it was the first epic fantasy book I had ever read, and I wasn't used to the genre at all at that point. Now, I know I would enjoy it much more after finding my footing in the genre, and I already bought the first four books in the series. My husband is reading them right now and has fallen in love with them. I can't wait for my turn!

  10. Sally - That's too bad that it slows down so much in the fourth book!

Heather - I didn't even realize the series wasn't finished yet! Crapola.

Sandy - LOL! It is intimidating, but since my usual quick reading wasn't working for me, I thought something a bit more epic is what I needed.

Amy - Ha! I will try to read fast so we can discuss. Although I am not sure how fast I can get through 4000 pages...

Jenny - The 118 pages I've read suggest you should definitely pick up the books. ;)

Heather - I think the hard part is that it is such a commitment! But the story and characters are fantabulous.

  11. My husband is currently on book 3 of this series and he has started to bug me to read them! I am really on the fence, to be honest. This is nothing I would typically read.

  12. I think I may try the series - the book seems too complicated!

  13. It stays good BUT gets incredibly complicated with a whole bunch of new characters, and terrible things happen to characters you care about. I am strongly in favor of your desired ending. That's what I want too! I want Jon to win everything!

  14. My son loves this series, but I don't think it's for me.

  15. My husband watched the series (without me) and really loved it. We ended up buying a box set of the first four in paperback so we could both read them. He just wants to skip the first book and jump into the second (weirdo). I'm trying to avoid reading them or watching the series until I am done with my project. You see, I KNOW I will be completely obsessed with them once I start and I can't really avoid my project list until i finished. So, I must wait.

My husband really likes the name Arya. So much, in fact, that he is insisting we name a daughter that. I just hope the character doesn't become some kind of evil psychopath, because that just can't happen. :)

  16. Absolutely new to me so thanks for the post!

  17. I haven't read it and I'm afraid to try it for fear of getting sucked in!

  18. Oh yes, it is as awesome as you think! I loved this book!!! I immediately added it to my top ten favorite books list. Arya is one of my favorites too. I'm going to name my next cat Arya when we get her...someday soon, I hope! Can't wait until you finish and we can hear your final thoughts!

  19. This is such an incredible book! Yes, oh Bran. :( And my least favorite character was Viserys, I actually liked Tyrion after a bit. I'm planning on posting my review...some day... I just started reading book 2 and love it every bit as much as the 1st.

  20. The series is fracking awesome! Definitely check it out when you can. Everything you imagine it looks like, they did with the HBO series.
I started book 4 but couldn't finish it. A bit boring and reading series back to back sometimes doesn't work for me. I will pick it up again eventually :)

  21. I have now finished all 5 of the published volumes in this series. After I had completed the first 2 novels I thought this series would be brilliant. After the third book, "A Strom of Swords", was finished I thought, "Mr. King wasted a book but will get back on track after having lost his way.

Then I read the last 2 volumes, "Crows" & "Dragons". Mr. King is not the next Tolkien, he is the author of the second Fantasy based soap opera. "Dark Shadows" made it through 5 years on TV, this one will make it through 4 with a vastly diminished audience. It was extremely difficult to read the last 2 volumes, work rather than entertainment.

Tolkien told a story of good versus evil. King tells a story of bad versus worse that leaves a reader, at the end, ambivalent towards all the characters. It's a shame given where it all started but I'll be darned if I will spend a penny on his 6th and 7th volumes of this mess.
