BBAW: Community

The first prompt of BBAW is here and it's perfect! "While the awards are a fun part of BBAW, they can never accurately represent the depth and breadth of diversity in the book blogging community. Today you are encouraged to highlight a couple of bloggers that have made book blogging a unique experience for you. They can be your mentors, a blogger that encouraged you to try a different kind of book, opened your eyes to a new issue, made you laugh when you needed it, or left the first comment you ever got on your blog. Stay positive and give back to the people who make the community work for you!"

I find creating a list a bit disingenuous. I don't have the time to honor the many, many blogs I have fallen in love with over the years. After some serious paring down last month, I am down to 199 blogs I subscribe to through Google Reader, and each one captured my fancy in one way or another. I figured you guys wouldn't want a list of 199 blogs, so I had to think of a way to narrow it down. So here are some kooky categories which helped me make a short list: (the pictures were selected randomly by who had pics and what fit after typing up the post):

Same Name
Trish (pictured left) from Love, Laughter, and a Touch of Insanity gets first place in this category. First of all, we share a name - Trish (-a in my case, but hey close enough). Second, she is one awesome woman: one of the first bloggers to comment on my blog, and a big reason why I joined the book blogging community to begin with.

Same Books
While there are many bloggers who enjoy the same books I do, Ana from things mean a lot shares my very specific (and obsessive) love of Neil Gaiman, so she wins out in this category. She also writes thought-provoking, intelligent, and insightful posts about a wide variety of books with a wonderful emphasis on fantasy-based novels.

Role Models
I have three in this category. First, Amanda (pictured right) from Ramblings is my role model in that she consistently writes intelligent posts on a variety of topics. She has also been rocking out the weight loss this year. Second, Amy from Amy Reads shames me with her focus on women and minority studies type books which are important, intelligent, and downright interesting. Finally, Sandy of You've Gotta Read This has to be the busiest but most on top of things blogger out there. Seriously, that woman leads one awesome and hectic life but still manages to read great books and write great posts.

Goal Setters
Two bloggers stand out to me for this category: Allie of A Literary Odyssey and Erin of Erin Reads rock my world with their ability to set and keep goals. These two make lists of books they want to read, and then they *gasp* actually read them! I am notoriously bad at this, so I'm really impressed by people who can stay on task!

Funny Girls
Humor is something I love but struggle with. I hate to admit it, but I am not exactly a funny person. I have a great sense of humor, but an inability to translate my thoughts to the funny. Jill (above right) of Fizzy Thoughts and Jenners (above left) of Life...with Books, on the other hand, are absolutely freaking hilarious!

The Writer
Heather of Raging Bibliomania writes amazing book reviews. They not only review the book but also add a bit of analysis or social commentary to the mix. When I (and many others) do this, the commentary can overrun the review - which is, of course, not a problem - but Heather manages to do both without rambling on for dozens of paragraphs and wasting readers' time.

The Professionals
There are two professionals I love to read: Neil Gaiman (below left) and Stephen  Fry (below right). They rock. Nuff said.

I could keep going, but here are 10 book bloggers and two professional bloggers that I love to read. I hope you check them out and start following them too.

  1. I absolutely love what you have done here! I don't follow all of these ladies (but now I plan to) but would 110% agree with you on Jenners and Jill and Heather and Nymeth. Also, thank you for honoring me. My busy ass is starting to wear down right now...off in a minute to work the school Grandparents Day, then I'm going to come back home and pass out!

  2. GREAT categories! I've been behind in blogging while taking care of Corki and his health issues but hope to participate in some of BBAW. I love how you did this. It's always so hard to narrow down bloggers especially if you follow as many as we do. #addicts

  3. I totally admire Allie and Erin too. Whenever I make lists, I always tend to stray. It's a disease of some kind :)

  5. So many you mention are my favorites too! And I don't buy you not being able to put your funny stuff in words - I'm thinking about that post with the crazy book covers from not too long ago, maybe spring or last fall? You rock. :D

I had a hard time choosing. But I opted for totally unheard of blogs. Isn't that the intention of community? To spread far and wide!!

  22. Oh gosh I'd never want to shame you :) Thanks for listing me, I really appreciate it! I hope I can inspire rather than shame though, heh. Love that you also highlighted same name, and funny - Jill is so funny! And wow, yes, Heather's posts always make me want to try better at my own!

  24. LOL--so, kind of a shock to open up my Google Reader and see my mug staring back at me. Thank you Trisha. And if it's any consolation, I went by Tricia until I graduated high school when I shortened things to Trish. So, for a third of my life we have had the same name (though different spelling).

And I disagree--I do think you're funny. A very witty type of funny. Absolutely love your posts. ;)

  26. Thanks so much for the very wonderful shout-out, it is so much appreciated, and means so much to me. I have to say that finding your blog was one of the best strokes of luck for me in a long time. You always seem to be reading the most amazing things, and have a way of analyzing them that always makes me give pause and think. So thanks for being a blogger that I can really look up to and admire, as well as being so very intelligent and creative with your reviews. You are much appreciated!

I also wanted to add that I agree with your choices as well. Jenners makes me laugh and is effortlessly funny all the time, as is Jill. And Sandy is amazing in her ability to do it all, and impressively keep it all under control in addition to writing some of the the most enticing reviews out there. Amy is constantly challenging my brain with the amazing books she reads and her reaction to them. All really great choices.

  27. Thanks for the suggestions. I joined your site and look forward to reading reviews.

  37. I love your categories! I was struck as I made my list that it would have been an almost completely difference list if I made it last year. It has been fun to tour the blogosphere today and see which blogs mean the most to all the blogs I read!

  47. Sounds like great blogs. I've never heard of any of them, EXCEPT Life with Books, which I had on my list too. :=) But that gives me a chance to check them out. Thanks for sharing and introducing them.

    Happy BBAW!

    Hope to stay connected.

  48. I liked the way that you made up categories to talk about different bloggers. It was one of the things that I struggled with as I just didn't want to leave out any of the blogs that I love. What a fun post!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Love your list with all its excellent categories! It's full of bloggers I love and bloggers that I'm sure I ought to be loving!

I'm with you in being so impressed by the goal setters. I'm crap at that sort of thing. I could set a goal to go to bed tonight and still just about fail. ;-)
