2014's Reading Report

My Year End Report is rather pitiful as I only managed to read 39 books this year, which is about one-third of my totals pre-Madison. Priorities, they do change. I will say though, that reading 100 less books a year sure does make stats quite easy. Still, I only have a few to report:

Male/Female Author: 13/26
Fiction/Nonfiction: 33/6
Series/Standalone: 20/13
New/Re-read: 23/10

I'm surprised by the male to female ratio, but the other stats are pretty normal. So, most boring year-end report, right? In an effort to make it a bit more interesting, here's some award winners from the year:

Classics Read: Lolita, Letters to a Young Poet, Heart of Darkness, The Turn of the Screw

Best Non-Fiction: Pilgrim's Wilderness

Most Surprising: The Martian I never liked audio but I adored this one.

Best Series: The Raven Cycle: The Raven Boys, The Dream Thieves, Blue Lily Lily Blue,

The One(s) That Will Stick with Me: Lolita and 13 Reasons Why

The Books I'm spending all my time reading right now (and which have severely decreased my for-pleasure reading in December:

These two Lit Theory books, along with Heart of Darkness and Turn of the Screw, are my readings for an Introduction to Literary Theory grad class, and as such, they are what I'm spending my free time with.

As you can see, I didn't list a Best Book of the Year. I've never been able to decide on one favorite of anything, so I'm not even going to try. I would love, however, to hear everyone else's choices for best book read this year!

  1. Honestly, I love reading less than I did a few years ago! I still make goals to read less. Of course, "less" for me is far more than most people. :D It's just low for the book blogging world. I find I can enjoy and remember books more that way!

  2. I think loving The Martian surprised a lot of people! And of course I never would have noticed it, I don't think, but for bloggers!

  4. I also loved The Martian. Not sure what my absolute best would be - there were a lot of good ones. I am definitely glad I discovered the Raven Boys series, though I've still got to find time to listen to book 3.

    Happy New Year!

  6. I am really hoping to read The Martian on audiobook but my library doesn't seem to have it :-( I may just have to make the request at this rate as people seem to love the audio version!

  7. Lolita is such a beautifully written book. It's been a few years since I read it and I still think about it.

  8. I remember both of those theory books from my lit theory class as an undergrad! I think I still have them floating around in a box somewhere, even though I'm not sure I will ever read them again :)

  9. I've got Heart of Darkness on my classics 50 list. I wonder if/when I'll get to it. I do want to read The Committee Members and know it will be more fun than HoD.

  10. It ate my first comment...aagghh!!
So, in brief...my brother was underwhelmed by Pilgrim, I am disowning him. 13 Reasons Why was written by a local author and is set in a fictional version of my town, which always makes for a memorable read for me, and Lolita on audio is even better (and creepier) than in print.
    Happy New Year!
