Many, many people make New Year's Resolutions, a handful of (typically) cliched goals that are rarely accomplished (okay that sounds really pessimistic, but..come on now, you know what I mean). Instead of doing a few resolutions, I'm making a much longer, more involved, and hopefully more specific than cliched list of goals which feels a bit more similar to a happiness project than a list of resolutions.
Life Goals, Resolutions, Happiness Project, call it what you will, but here's what I am hoping to accomplish in 2015.
Books and Blogging
1. Read 50 books
2. Post at least 2x/week
3. Post about the family at least 2x/month
4. Post about teaching at least 2x/month
5. Clear 300 books off the shelves
6. Reorganize my bookshelves to better see the TBR piles
Food and Drink
1. Cook a "real" meal at least 1x/week
2. Freeze at least two meals a month
3. Cook at least two new recipes per month
4. Organize my recipes and cookbooks
5. Try at least 10 new types of wine
6. Try at least 5 new types of vegetable
7. Eat fruit at least 3x/week
Health and Fitness
1. Lose 50 pounds (back to pre-babies weight)
2. Exercise 30 minutes/day, 3x/week (once with the kids)
3. Take a daily multivitamin
4. Stretch (separate from exercise) at least 4 days/week
Home and Organization
1. Get picture albums up-to-date and organized
2. Do at least 1 load of laundry during the week instead of saving it all up for Sunday
3. Maintain a more detailed, more organized schedule/planner - and check it multiple times per day
4. Reorganize the kitchen
5. Make a family memory book
Work and Education
1. Develop a learning objectives packet for each class
2. Finalize the How to Earn an A handbook and quiz for each class
3. Take at least two graduate courses in literature
4. Decide on pursuing a second Masters or a Doctorate
5. Develop standard rubrics for all assignments
Family and Fun
1. Write a letter to Madison and Carter at least 1x/month
2. Go on at least four family outings (zoo, pumpkin patch, botanical gardens, aquarium, etc.)
3. Attend at least one adult event (concert, play, etc.)
4. Get professional family photos (and make family memory book)
5. Exercise with Madison (and Carter) at least 1x/week
Some of these are one-and-done projects; others are life-style-changing goals. To be honest, I could include about 300 more goals, but let's be reasonable, right?
I will be putting this list up on a dedicated page on the blog, and I hope to write update posts at the beginning of every month.
These sound fantastic Trisha! I'm really big into making lots of goals in lots of different areas of my life each year, so I highly approve. :D And I LOVE your wine goal - I think I might steal that for next year! This year I'm trying to stay away from wine a little, mostly because when I drink it, I often decide to eat things I shouldn't eat (like flour and sugar, ha!), so I'm not keeping it in the house anymore, and drinking only at restaurants. Since I don't go out very often, I don't know that I'll have ten opportunities, but we'll see. The store down the street DOES have a wine tasting every Friday afternoon... :D
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of alcohol, but I do like quite a few of the wines I've tasted, so it's sort of my "adult" goal. I'm usually the 30-something woman drinking kitty cocktails (7up and grenadine) or Coke. Maybe I can at least go with wine, right? I need to expand my horizons a bit to find what kind of wine goes well with food, what kind is refreshing, etc.
DeleteDo you mean brands of wine or like white/red/ice/pinot noir, etc? cuz that sounds overwhelming for someone not quite fond of it. Just curious... BUT, I do think you can find good/bad in every type so don't rule out a whole category just for the one you tried and didn't like. Anyway, nevermind. do what works for you!
DeleteWhen I said I don't like alcohol, I meant liquor. I do like wine; I just tend to stay in the dry red variety and feel I should branch out more. :)
DeleteGot it. Wouldn't it be fun to enjoy a glass or two of a dry red and discuss literature and film theory? Of course, you would be talking and I would be listening....
DeletePS I thank you in my latest blog post...
DeleteI love love your goals! They seem challenging, but doable. I need to add some of them to my goals list like the professional family photo. I miss having one of them and kids get big so fast. Good luck with your goals!
ReplyDeleteWhew, you've got a boat load of goals! I'm all like, uh, "eat less food, read more books, try and move more without hurting myself..." Yours are way more impressive. Hope you put a big dent in them this year!
ReplyDeleteThese are definitely more specific than I ever get. Good luck achieving them all!
ReplyDeleteI like making lists of goals, even if they're just a reminder of "this is where I'd like to be." Good luck and Happy New Year!!!
ReplyDeleteYAY! I love your teaching posts. Do share do tell love love love!
ReplyDeleteI just said I post more about teaching; I like that you were specific. I think at least one post per month should be a teaching post for me, maybe. I have to think about it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, as a rule, I love teaching posts by other people, so I approve of this list.
I would love to take graduate courses in literature. Enjoy!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat times are ahead, if like me you love to re-organize your shelves! Currently I only have half of a bookcase available and decided that only the TBR would be visible.
ReplyDeleteGreat goals. Who cares how long your list is? It's your list. Make it as long as you want. I find if I don't list or write down whatever goal I have, it has less chances of getting completed. Or if I don't create a list, I'll look back at the end of the year and think Whoa my year was all over the place, did I accomplish anything that I really wanted to.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your goals.
Also, I highly recommend doing the family memory book. Now that my kids are grown, I cherish the scrapbooks I made because I can't remember everything from their childhoods without looking at pictures. I wish I had made scrapbooks of their early years (birth-5) but at least I have photos. Then I stopped taking photos the end of their high school years and I regret that too. I did yearly books because I like chronological order. If you get to nothing else on your family list, try to do this one first.
ReplyDeleteThose look good! At work, they always tell us that we should set goals that are specific, measurable, actionable and two more things, and all of your goals seem to meet those criteria. The wine one seems quite fun to me, as does the vegetable one. I don't know if I could find 5 veggies that I've never tried - do you have any in mind? That will make the whole recipe thing more fun, too, I bet :-)
ReplyDeleteI should make it a goal to cook one or twice a week too. I get so lazy about it and end up eating the same boring things, or going out to eat, more often than is healthy. Good luck on all your goals!
