Top 10 Books I Will (Probably) Never Read
This list could be remarkably long so to narrow it - and embarrass myself - how about Top 10 Books ON MY SHELVES FOR YEARS that I Will (Probably) Never Read. I know. Sad, right?
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Narcissus and Goldmund by Hermann Hesse
Possession by A.S. Byatt
Pudd'nhead Wilson by Mark Twain
Testimony by Anita Shreve
The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullogh
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom
The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
In some of these cases, I really do want to read the book, but every time I pick it up, I put it right back down without making it more than 20 pages. I know a handful of these are TOP TEN BLOGGER BOOKS OF ALL FREAKING TIME, but if any are really really really really worth reading, let me know.
Pudd'nhead Wilson is quality. You can skip the rest of them. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI really like The Historian. I was disappointed with Cloud Atlas (could have been foggy pregnancy brain? Or post-baby brain? Something baby related). Same with Possession, though I know some LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and I think she's finally convinced me to cull my books.
Several of these books are on my never to read list too.
ReplyDeleteOh man The Thorn Birds has been on my list for way too long as well. Cloud Atlas is absolutely choice though.
ReplyDeleteI don't know most of these, but if the ones I do, here are my thoughts:
ReplyDeleteCloud Atlas - I've heard is amazing once you really get into it. But it terrifies me so I haven't tried.
Possession - I still consider this one of my favorite books of all times, but at the same time, my reasons are very personal, and I've never gotten through any of her other books, and I know people either love it or hate it. I always skip the poetry, too, ha!
A Discovery of Witches - So not worth it. I listened to this on audio for THREE DAYS traveling up to Boston last summer, and it could have been reduced to half the length of the book if it took out every description of every wine the male lead had ever tasted, or every minute description of every yoga move the female lead had ever done. It had a bit of pro-rape-culture stuff (ew) and by the end, I was just tired. I tried to read the second book and quit after a short while because I just didn't care anymore.
Yes to Cloud Atlas but it definitely takes perseverance. No to A Discovery of Witches (plus, you'd need to read two more books after that, at least.. that's the idea).
ReplyDeleteCool! I've read 4 and will probably attempt the Historian 'someday'.
