The February Meme question:
What about modern classics? Pick a book published since 2000 and say why you think it will be considered as a “classic” in the future.
For some reason, I sat and stared at this question FOREVER. The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak is the most popular answer so far, and I can definitely see why people are choosing it. Quite artfully written, The Book Thief captured a great many readers. I didn't love it the way most did, so it's not my choice for this one. But what is? What is? What is? What is? Like I said, this was a difficult question for me.
Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus certainly pops into my head as a possibility. So many disparate elements are woven into this story: a double handful of plot lines, a whole mess of characters, a setting so complex I believe an entire book could be written just describing the various aspects. And yet, it is all put together so perfectly creating an absolutely breathtaking read.
Writing this reminds me that I need to pick up the audio version of this book as it is supposed to be phenomenal.

The Night Circus' reputation as a new classic will surely be solidified it we get a good movie adaptation.
ReplyDeleteTotally with you on The Night Circus! I wasn't a huge fan of The Book Thief to be honest - it felt really gimmicky to me and the gimmick took away my ability to empathize with the characters, which is really sad!! But I know other people adore it and I do think it will also probably be called a modern classic in the future as well.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful choice!
ReplyDeleteI didn't LOVE this as much as others did, but I can totally see why you would pick it. It is quite beautifully written, and like you said, the settings and characters are so complex. There's something there for everyone, and I think it'll be greatly appreciated by many readers for years and years.
I would also love to listen to the audiobook for this! That must feel like one is in a dream.
So far I have not answered any of the memes from The Classic Club but this has been an interesting one to see everyone's selections. I have not read The Book Thief nor The Night Circus though I own both. Eek! Got some reading to do.
ReplyDeleteGreat choice! I loved actually loved both those books, both original in ways that ought to move them into "classics" territory, but I liked The Night Circus just a tad more than The Book Thief. Hadn't heard about the audio version being so good. Methinks it's time for a reread -- ur, listen.
ReplyDeleteThe Night Circus is a really interesting book! It definitely has a lot of threads that can be teased out. It's probably a really interesting study considering it was originally a Nanowrimo novel too; it would be really interesting to study it from that angle.
ReplyDeleteI could get on board with both of these as modern classics. And I would love a move of The Night Circus! is one in the works?
